BAG Art Gallery hosts Mariana Copello’s solo show in Houston

Ana María Alarcón

Houston, October 6, 2019. – BAG Art Gallery is hosting the solo show of Venezuelan artist Mariana Copello. The exhibition, Choreographic Abstractionism in Mariana Copello, presents a selection of 40 artworks, and will be open from October 26 until November 6, at Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston (MATCH).

The exhibition consists of sculptures, installations, photographs, and works on paper; the two-dimensional pieces respond to the artist’s most recent investigation and could be seen through a new series of silkscreens, Linear Variations (2019).  “This is a study of color and line where I also look for that vibration, movement, and rhythm” Copello remarks.  “I am fascinated by the intimate connection among the artworks, the rhythmical process of working on paper, and the manual feel of new materials” the artist adds.

The exhibition offers a journey through the artist’s exploration on three aspects:  color, absence of color, and the return to color.  There will also be a space for a retrospective that links her previous works with the most recent ones, emphasizing the evolution of the artist’s work.

The exhibition is being curated by Victor Fuenmayor, well-known art critic and writer, who holds a Humanities degree, an Honorary Doctorate by the Universidad del Zulia, a PhD in Semiology from the Sorbonne in Paris, and was decorated as Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Government.  The museography is being done by Rosa Ana Orlando, an art specialist with extensive knowledge of Art History, many years of experience in art collection management, as well as in exhibition planning and design.  Rosa Ana Orlando holds a Master of Liberal Arts and a Master of Arts in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

About this exhibition, Fuenmayor explains how “Mariana Copello musicalizes the sculptural space through rhythms, and although the musician is no longer there, the rhythm remains (…) Squares of different sizes that stand on the ground, with supports and postures of labile balance, in a landscape by a fountain, lose their heaviness and take the attributes of lightness of a geometric dance, or abstract ballet, where geometry and rhythm defeat the gravity of the material body”.

The exhibition Choreographic Abstractionism in Mariana Copello counts with the important collaboration with Venezuelan multi-media artist Violette Bule, who is participating with a series of 22 photographs of her creation, and “under her vision and creative lense” of the monumental sculpture of Copello (Frecuencia Espacial, 2017).

The audience will also be able to see the research work that Copello develops in her studio during the creation process of her pieces, which has never been shared with the public before.
